Trachycarpus fortunei is a medium-sized, hardy, upright palm tree appreciated for its size and cold tolerance. A great choice for the tropical inspired small garden or side yard, especially if your average annual minimum temperatures drop to 10F. Plant in clusters of three or more or use singularly as a specimen, for borders, or in large containers. Protect from high winds and provide some shade in hot arid areas. The Windmill Palm is easily identified by its hairy trunk densely covered with grey-brown fibers from old leaf sheaths. These persistent net-like fibers have been described to resemble a cheesecloth. The evergreen fan-shaped, rigid leaves are deeply divided and radiate upward and outward into a compact crown. These large green palmate leaves are 3 feet wide with stems 2-4 feet long. Native to subtropical mountainous areas in China, provide regular to occasional water but will tolerate some periods of drought.
