    Description

The Japanese Green Maple is a graceful tree, prized for its vibrant green foliage that transforms into shades of gold, orange, or red in the fall before dropping to the ground. Its delicate, deeply cut, 5-to-9-toothed lobed leaves give it a lacy, airy appearance, making it an attractive focal point in patio containers or landscapes. Relatively low-maintenance, Japanese Maples are extremely popular for their stunning foliage.

Acer palmatum is a beautiful, deciduous tree with a broad, rounded shape. Growing at a slow to moderate rate, the Green Japanese Maple reaches a mature size of 20 to 25 ft. tall and wide. Typically, faster growth occurs during its younger years, gradually slowing as it reaches maturity. Under optimal conditions, Acer palmatum can grow 1 to 2 feet per year.

    Plant Care

Here's how to plant and care for Japanese Maples:

    Planting a Japanese Maple

    Choose the Right Location:

    • Sunlight: Prefers partial sun to partial shade. It can tolerate full sun, but in hotter climates, some afternoon shade will prevent leaf scorch.
    • Soil: Needs well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0-7.0). It thrives in loamy soil but can tolerate sandy or clay soils if well-draining.
    • Protection from Wind: Choose a location that is sheltered from strong winds, which can damage the delicate foliage.

    Prepare the Soil:

    • Dig a Hole: Make a hole that is twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. This allows the roots to spread out easily.
    • Amend the soil with organic compost if it is poor, heavy clay, or sandy to improve its structure and drainage.

    Planting Steps:

    1. Remove the Tree from Its Container: Handle the root ball carefully, loosening any circling roots.
    2. Position the Tree: Place the tree in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the ground. Make sure the tree is upright and straight.
    3. Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, gently pressing down to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil.

    Watering:

    • Young Trees: Water deeply and regularly during the first couple of years to help establish a strong root system.
    • Established Trees: After establishment, the tree is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture, especially during hot, dry periods. Water deeply once a week during dry spells.
