The Paddle Plant Kalanchoe provides a unique touch to your succulent bed, container garden or patio planter. Flat rounded foliage stacks upon itself in an attractive 2’ tall by 3’ wide mound that resembles a pile of clams on the ocean floor. During spring and summer, the leaves are blue-green with red tips. As the days cool and the sun wanes into winter, the foliage turns deep red. While the flowers are insignificant, 3’ tall flower spikes rise above the foliage to add a splash of drama to the garden.
How big does the Paddle Plant grow?
It usually grows about 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, with large, flat, round leaves stacked like a rosette. In bloom, it can send up a tall flower stalk that reaches 2 to 3 feet.
What kind of light and soil does it prefer?
Full sun to bright light indoors gives it the best red edges. It loves gritty, fast-draining soil — cactus or succulent mix is perfect.
How often should I water it?
Only when the soil is completely dry. Overwatering is fatal, so think “desert patience,” not “spa day.”
Does it bloom, and what do the flowers look like?
Yes, mature plants produce tall spikes of small, tubular yellow-white flowers in late winter or early spring. After flowering, the main rosette may die, but offsets often grow around it.
