Acer rubrum 'October Glory' is a fast-growing, tall red maple admired for its outstanding and reliable fall color, especially in warmer climates. Featuring a dense, rounded canopy and large leaves, this deciduous tree showcases glorious fall color that lasts longer than most cultivars and is among the last to turn in autumn. Relatively disease-resistant. ‘October Glory’ grows best with regular water.

The ‘October Glory’ red maple is an excellent shade tree, well-suited to areas with mild winters and hot summer temperatures. In spring, deep green leaves emerge, transitioning to vibrant shades of orange, deep red, and reddish-purple in the fall before shedding. Under optimal conditions, ‘October Glory’ can grow 2 to 3 feet per year.

How big does the October Glory Red Maple grow?
It can reach 40–50 feet tall and 30–40 feet wide, with a strong oval canopy. It’s fast-growing, so give it space this is not a “patio tree,” unless you hate your patio.
What kind of light and soil does it prefer?
Full sun gives the best color, though it tolerates light shade. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil alkaline or compacted soil that makes it sulk.
How often should I water and fertilize it?
Keep it well-watered, especially during its first few years. Once established, it’s moderately drought-tolerant, but deep watering in dry spells helps maintain health and color.
Does it need pruning or special care?
Minimal pruning is best just removing weak or crossing branches in late winter. Over-pruning ruins its natural form faster than a bad haircut.
