Osmanthus fragrans is a dense evergreen shrub grown for its foliage and extremely fragrant flowers. This flowering ornamental shrub, native to Asia, is a member of the olive family, but does not produce olives.
Osmanthus fragrans is ideal for use as a border or privacy shrub. Its dense, upright form is heavily covered with 5" long, oval, glossy green leaves. Highly aromatic, the small white apricot-scented flowers bloom sporadically throughout the year.
This species can also be trained as an espalier, small tree, or grown in a container. Other common names include, Fragrant Osmanthus, Sweet Osmanthus, Tea Olive, and Fragrant Olive.
How big does the Fragrant Tea Olive grow?
It typically grows 8 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, forming a dense, upright evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy green leaves.
When does it bloom and what do the flowers look like?
It blooms in fall and again in spring (sometimes year-round in mild climates) with small, creamy white to pale orange flowers that fill the air with a sweet, apricot-like fragrance.
What kind of light and soil does it prefer?
Full sun to partial shade is ideal. It thrives in rich, well-drained soil that’s kept slightly moist though it’s surprisingly adaptable once established.
