    Description

Osmanthus fragrans is a dense evergreen shrub grown for its foliage and extremely fragrant flowers. This flowering ornamental shrub, native to Asia, is a member of the olive family, but does not produce olives.

Osmanthus fragrans is ideal for use as a border or privacy shrub. Its dense, upright form is heavily covered with 5" long, oval, glossy green leaves. Highly aromatic, the small white apricot-scented flowers bloom sporadically throughout the year.

This species can also be trained as an espalier, small tree, or grown in a container. Other common names include, Fragrant Osmanthus, Sweet Osmanthus, Tea Olive, and Fragrant Olive.

    Plant Care

Here's how to plant and care for Fragrant Tea Olive:

    Choosing the Right Location

    • Light: Osmanthus fragrans thrives best in full sun to partial shade. It prefers at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day but can tolerate light shade, especially in hotter climates.
    • Climate: Suitable for USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11. It can handle temperatures down to about 10°F (-12°C) but may need protection in colder regions.
    • Shelter: Plant in a location sheltered from strong winds, which can damage the leaves and flowers.

    Soil Preparation

    • Soil Type: Sweet Olive prefers well-drained, fertile soil. It can adapt to a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and slightly clay soils, as long as drainage is good.
    • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7.5) is ideal. You can amend the soil with organic matter like compost to improve fertility and drainage.
    • Planting Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Loosen the soil at the bottom and sides of the hole to encourage root growth.

    Planting

    • Spacing: Space plants about 5-6 feet apart if you’re planting them in a row. This will allow them to spread naturally and create a dense hedge.
    • Positioning: Place the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill the hole with soil, and gently press down to remove any air pockets.
    • Mulching: Apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to avoid rot.

    Watering

    • Consistent Moisture: Water the plant regularly, especially during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
    • Drought Tolerance: Once established, Osmanthus fragrans is relatively drought-tolerant, but it will flower more abundantly with consistent watering.

    Fertilizing

    • Balanced Fertilizer: Feed Sweet Olive with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) in early spring, just before new growth begins. You can also add compost or well-rotted manure to enrich the soil.
    • Additional Feeding: If the plant shows signs of poor growth or yellowing leaves, consider a light additional feeding in mid-summer.

    Pruning

    • Light Pruning for Shape: Prune lightly after the blooming period to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. You can remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches as needed.
    • Shearing for Hedges: If you’re growing Osmanthus fragrans as a hedge, it can be sheared into shape, but avoid heavy pruning, as this can reduce flowering.

    Pest and Disease Control

    • Resistant to Most Issues: Sweet Olive is generally resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance plant.
    • Occasional Pests: Occasionally, it may attract aphids, scale, or spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
    Why Fragrant Tea Olives?

People enjoy planting Fragrant Tea Olives (Osmanthus fragrans) for several reasons, largely due to their appealing combination of beauty, fragrance, and versatility:

    Incredible Fragrance

    • One of the main reasons people plant Fragrant Tea Olives is their delightful scent. The tiny white, yellow, or orange flowers emit a sweet, apricot-like fragrance that can fill the garden, especially in the evening.
    • The fragrance is not overpowering but gentle and pleasant, making it a favorite for gardens, patios, and areas near walkways or entrances where the scent can be easily enjoyed.

    Year-Round Evergreen Foliage

    • Osmanthus fragrans is an evergreen shrub, meaning it retains its lush, green leaves throughout the year. This provides consistent color and structure to the garden, even during winter months.
    • The dense, glossy foliage makes it an excellent choice for hedges, screens, or as a backdrop for other flowering plants.

    Low Maintenance

    • Fragrant Tea Olives are relatively easy to care for once established. They are drought-tolerant, require minimal pruning, and are resistant to many pests and diseases.
    • This low-maintenance nature makes them a popular choice for both novice and experienced gardeners who want a beautiful plant without a lot of fuss.
