European White Birch tree (Betula pendula) is easily recognized by its attractive, white, exfoliating bark, pendulous branches, and glossy, green triangular leaves, which turn golden yellow in autumn before falling to the ground. Sometimes known as Betula alba, Silver Birch, or Weeping Birch, this graceful tree makes a striking addition to any garden, whether as a single specimen or planted in groups.
Betula pendula is a small to medium-sized tree that begins with a pyramidal form, eventually maturing into an oval or rounded crown. As the tree ages, the bark near the base of the trunk becomes furrowed and blackish-gray. Its delicate, lacy canopy is characterized by upright main branches and drooping twigs, which give it a "weeping willow" look. Slim, cylindrical, immature male flower clusters, known as catkins, are visible in winter after the tree sheds its leaves. Female catkins develop in spring, shortly after the leaves emerge. Considered fast-growing, the European White Birch can grow up to 2 feet per year under optimal conditions.
