Campanula portenschlagiana (C. muralis) is an attractive, low-growing shrub with heart-shaped green leaves and bell-shaped, blue flowers on short stems that appear in spring and summer. Dalmatian Bellflower's dense habit makes it an excellent choice for small-scale areas, rock gardens, in between stepping stones, trailing over raised beds or walls, and borders.

This herbaceous perennial grows best in evenly moist, well-drained soil in USDA zones 5-7. Evergreen in frost-free climates. In California, Campanula portenschlagiana grows well in full sun in cool, coastal climates, but needs shade for the hot afternoons in arid, inland gardens. For a longer flowering period, remove spent blooms. Prune for a tidy look when the flowering period is over.

What light conditions does it prefer?
It thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, afternoon shade helps keep it blooming longer and prevents stress.
How often should I water Dalmatian Bellflower?
Water regularly during the first season to help it establish. Once established, it’s fairly drought tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during dry spells.
What type of soil does it need?
It grows best in well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter. It tolerates a range of soil types but dislikes soggy or compacted ground.
How do I prune or maintain it?
Trim back spent flowers and tidy the plant after blooming to encourage new growth and possible repeat flowering. Cut back old foliage in late winter or early spring.
