Dalmatian Bellflower
Campanula portenschlagiana (C. muralis)
Campanula portenschlagiana (C. muralis) is an attractive, low-growing shrub with heart-shaped green leaves and bell-shaped, blue flowers on short stems that appear in spring and summer. Dalmatian Bellflower's dense habit makes it an excellent choice for small-scale areas, rock gardens, in between stepping stones, trailing over raised beds or walls, and borders.
This herbaceous perennial grows best in evenly moist, well-drained soil in USDA zones 5-7. Evergreen in frost-free climates. In California, Campanula portenschlagiana grows well in full sun in cool, coastal climates, but needs shade for the hot afternoons in arid, inland gardens. For a longer flowering period, remove spent blooms. Prune for a tidy look when the flowering period is over.
Prefers loamy and moist soil with good drainage. Grow this plant in areas protected from the hot afternoon sun. Can be planted as far as 2 feet apart or closer for a faster, fuller effect. Remove spent blooms to promote further growth, more blooms, and a tidier appearance overall.
