Pink Dogwood Tree
Cornus x rutgersensis 'Stellar Pink'
Stellar Pink Dogwood, known for its spectacular display of light pink spring “flowers”, is an impressive tree with year-round interest. Cornus ‘Stellar Pink’, also known as Cornus x rutgersensis ‘Stellar Pink’ and Cornus x ‘Rutgan’, is an incredibly versatile tree. With its uniform, dense, upright growth habit, it makes for an elegant focal point, accent tree, privacy screen or as a shade tree with visual interest near porches, patios and terraces.
Stellar Pink Dogwood is a moderate growing deciduous tree, reaching 20 to 25 ft. tall by 15 to 20 ft. wide. A profusion of large, overlapping, light pink, flower-like bracts cover the tree in early spring, before the leaves emerge. The lush green foliage is shed in the fall, revealing the statuesque shape of the branches. ‘Stellar Pink’ is a sterile cultivar that does not produce fruit. Under optimal conditions, this Dogwood tree grows 1 to 2 feet per year.
Planting - Dogwood trees thrive in moist, well-drained acidic soil. Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Protect from harsh sun in hot regions.
Watering - Water regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist, but not soggy, until the roots are well-established (typically one to two years, depending on soil and climate conditions). Once established, adjust the watering frequency as needed, keeping in mind that they prefer moist, well-drained soils. Applying a rich organic mulch around the base of the tree will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.
Pruning - Stellar Pink Dogwood requires minimal maintenance. Prune as needed to remove damaged or overgrown branches or to maintain the desired shape.
Winter Hardiness - Hardy to -15°F, and grows best in USDA zones 5-8, Cornus ‘Stellar Pink’ can be grown with extra care in zones 9-10.
