    Description

This is no ordinary green shrub. Pittosporum 'Silver Sheen' shimmers with silver in sunlight when its shiny, lustrous green leaves sway in the breeze on slender black branches. Also known as Silver Sheen Kohuhu or Tawhiwhi, Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Silver Sheen' is versatile and very useful as a loose and lacy privacy screen, a tightly sheared boxed hedge, or as a specimen shrub with delicate, distinct foliage in its natural form.

    • Fast-growing, 2-3 ft./year under optimal conditions
    • Tolerates coastal conditions
    • Waterwise and low-maintenance
    • Versatile, upright, evergreen shrub
    • Can be used as a formal hedge, privacy screen, or specimen plant
    • 'Silver Sheen’ has a growth habit that is more loose and open than regular Pittosporum tenuifolium, and has smaller leaves.
    SUNLIGHT & LOCATION
    • Full sun in coastal climates, afternoon shade in hotter inland gardens
    • Tolerates various soil types, including clay soil
    • Hardy to 10-20°F, and grows best in USDA zones 8-11
    PLANTING
    • Choose a location with adequate drainage
    • Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball
    • Add G&B Organics Planting Mix to improve soil drainage and build strong soil environment that allows plants to reach their full potential
    • Fill the hole with soil to the crown of the roots (careful not to bury it), ensuring that the plant is straight and secure in the ground
    • Water deeply and thoroughly after planting
    • Add a 2-3 inch top later of Kellogg's Organic Gromulch to the ground to keep the soil cool and moist while providing a slow release of nutrients over time
    • Keep the mulch away from the base of the plant.
    • For the first year, continue to water deeply to establish an extensive root system
    WATERING
    • Water deeply and thoroughly after planting
    • For the first year, continue to water deeply to establish an extensive root system
    • Once established, reduce frequency and water as needed
    FERTILIZING
    PRUNING
    • Prune annually or more frequently to increase branch density or to maintain desired shape and size
    • Use a hedge trimmer to shear branches and create a thick, dense hedge
    • Use pruners to cut branches selectively and create an airy screen for dappled light
    SPACING
    • 3 ft. on-center is the recommended spacing for a formal hedge
    • 5 ft. on-center or more is recommended for an informal privacy screen
    • Spacing measured "on-center", from the center of one plant to the center of the next plant
