The night-blooming Peruvian cactus is a tall, sculptural plant with columnar 5-9 ribbed bluish-green or greyish-green stems and few, scattered reddish-brown spines along ribs. Large, funnel-shaped, white flowers bloom only once, at night, in late spring followed by big, red, egg-shaped fruits sometimes referred to as a Peruvian apple. Drought tolerant but may require additional irrigation during hot, dry months for best appearance. With its impressive outline, Cereus peruvianus is effective in rock gardens, xeric landscapes, or in large containers. Protect from hard frosts.
