Description

Euonymus japonicus 'Green Spire' (‘Greenspire’) is an excellent choice for a narrow, evergreen hedge. Ideal for small spaces where you want height but have no room for wide plants, 'Green Spire' has a columnar habit, forming green pillars that are up to 6 feet tall and 1-2 feet wide. This evergreen shrub has dense, glossy, dark-green leaves that are held tightly along the stems and tolerates shearing. Reliable, fast-growing, and well-behaved, Green Spire Euonymus grows well in virtually any soil type with supplemental irrigation and suits any garden style, formal or casual, as a hedge, privacy screen, or border plant. Tolerates coastal exposure.

Plant care

Green Spire Euonymus is a hardy, low-maintenance shrub that can thrive in various conditions. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Choose the Right Location

  • Sunlight: Green Spire Euonymus prefers full sun to partial shade. It can tolerate some shade, but it will grow best and maintain its compact, upright form with more sunlight. In hot climates, providing some afternoon shade can prevent leaf scorch.
  • Climate: This plant is well-suited to USDA Zones 6-9 and can tolerate a range of temperatures. It is generally frost-hardy but may need some protection in extremely cold conditions.

Prepare the Soil

  • Well-Draining Soil: Green Spire Euonymus can grow in a variety of soil types but prefers well-draining soil. It can tolerate sandy, loamy, or clay soils. If your soil is heavy and tends to retain water, amend it with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage.
  • Neutral to Slightly Acidic Soil: The plant is not too picky about soil pH but will do best in neutral to slightly acidic soil.

Planting Process

  1. Dig a Hole: Dig a hole that is about twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. This will give the roots space to spread out easily.
  2. Position the Plant: Remove the Green Spire Euonymus from its container and gently loosen the roots if they are compacted. Place the plant in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil.
  3. Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, pressing it down gently to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots.

Spacing

  • Proper Spacing for Hedges: If planting multiple Green Spire Euonymus for a hedge, space them about 1.5 to 2 feet apart. This allows them to grow together to form a dense, upright hedge.

Mulching

  • Apply Mulch: Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch (such as bark, wood chips, or compost) around the base of the plant. Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep the mulch a few inches away from the stems to prevent rot.

Watering

  • Regular Watering Until Established: Water the plant deeply and regularly during its first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, it will be more drought-tolerant but still benefits from occasional deep watering, especially during dry spells.
  • Avoid Overwatering: Green Spire Euonymus prefers well-drained soil, so avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Let the top few inches of soil dry out between waterings.
Why Green Spire Euonymus?

Benefits of Green Spire Euonymus

  • Evergreen Foliage: It retains its dark green leaves year-round, providing consistent color and structure to the garden.
  • Low Maintenance: Once established, it requires minimal care, making it a popular choice for busy gardeners.
  • Compact, Upright Growth: Its naturally narrow, upright form makes it suitable for smaller gardens and areas where space is limited.
