Green Cloud Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens 'Green Cloud') is an evergreen shrub with soft, rich green leaves, greener than the silvery foliage of most Texas Sages. From spring into fall it carries waves of small magenta-purple flowers. The heaviest flushes usually follow summer rain or a rise in humidity, which is why it is also called a "barometer bush." It is also sold as Green Cloud Texas Ranger and Green Cloud Cenizo.
The shrub is native to the Chihuahuan Desert region and handles heat, sun and dry conditions well once its roots are established. It typically grows 5–8 feet tall and 5–6 feet wide with a dense, rounded habit. It works well as an informal hedge, a screen, or a single accent plant in water-wise gardens. The flowers provide nectar for bees and other pollinators.
Plant it in full sun in soil that drains freely. Heavy, wet soil and frequent watering are its main problems. Water regularly during the first growing season, then cut back to deep, infrequent watering. Light shaping in late winter keeps it full; avoid shearing it into tight forms, which removes flowering wood.
