    Description

You’ll love the large, luminous, lavender-blue blooms of Blue Hibiscus, a stunning shrub that flowers continuously in mild climates and is perfectly suited for the California garden. Fast-growing, drought-tolerant, and heat-loving, it requires minimal maintenance, making it the perfect choice for both novice and seasoned gardeners alike.

Blue Hibiscus is a wonderful addition to coastal gardens or waterwise landscapes, and is pollinator-friendly. Its glossy, violet petals form funnel-shaped flowers that bloom profusely in spring and throughout the year attracting bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Plant Alyogyne huegelli as a standalone focal point or vibrant backdrop to add a pop of color and height to garden beds. Its fast growth and heat tolerance make it ideal for creating informal hedges or privacy screens along driveways or streets. With judicious pruning, you can shape Blue Hibiscus into a beautiful, shorter, fuller shrub for a more refined look near entryways or in containers.

Native to Australia, Alyogyne huegelli is a shrub with deeply lobed, rough-textured, dark green leaves. This fantastic, flowering shrub can grow up to 10 ft. tall if left unpruned, but can be more compact and lush with pruning. Evergreen in USDA zones 9-11 and winter hardy to 30°F. Unlike the tropical hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, this Blue Hibiscus is waterwise and low-maintenance.

Adorned with large, radiant lavender-blue blooms, Alyogyne huegelli epitomizes easy-care elegance, flourishing continuously and thriving effortlessly in mild climates. Order yours today and discover the enchanting allure of Blue Hibiscus.

    Plant care

Alyogyne huegelii grows best in well-drained soil, in full sun, and with protection from strong winds.

Water deeply and frequently during the first few weeks to develop a good root system. Reduce frequency once established. Mildly drought-tolerant and waterwise when well-rooted, Blue Hibiscus requires little watering but looks best with some extra water during extremely dry conditions. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch to help cool the soil and conserve moisture.

Blue Hibiscus can get a “big leggy” if left unpruned and the foliage on the lower branches is sparse. If this wild look doesn’t suit your landscaping needs, cut back hard in late spring, after the flush of flowers. For a dense, mounding shrub, prune twice a year or more. New shoots emerge from older wood, and pruning promotes the growth of a full, lush bush while also increasing flower production. The fast growth of Alyogyne also makes it well-suited to creating an espalier.

Like all members of the Malvaceae family, the flowers of the Blue Hibiscus open in the morning and last one day. Luckily, this shrub is extremely floriferous and can produce hundreds of blooms per season.
