Bring beauty and joy to your garden with Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy', a showy stonecrop popular for its drought tolerance and attractive rosy-pink flowers that bloom from late summer through autumn.

Autumn Joy Sedum is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial with pale green succulent leaves arranged on upright, unbranched succulent stems. The fleshy foliage is oblong-shaped with slightly scalloped or toothed margins. In late summer, tiny pink star-shaped blooms appear in dense, flattened clusters. The flowers open as light pink and age to a rosy-pink color followed by russet-brown seed heads. Autumn Joy goes dormant in winter and the foliage dies back to the ground. The dried flower stalks can be left in place for the birds to eat the seeds during winter or can be cut back. This cold hardy cultivar has been reclassified as Hylotelephium spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’ but is still commonly referred to as Autumn Joy Sedum.

Autumn Joy is an excellent border sedum with its dense, erect flower clusters reaching up to 2 ft. in height. For a dramatic flower display, plant in large groupings, or scatter throughout a mixed border for a repetition of color. This low maintenance, drought tolerant perennial is excellent in rock gardens, coastal gardens, or containers. The flowers are attractive to birds, bees, and butterflies, and can be used in fresh or dried cut flower arrangements.

Easy to grow, Autumn Joy Sedum is a hardy succulent that makes a bold statement in the garden with rosy pink blooms in the fall. This carefree and waterwise perennial is sure to be a favorite for years.

How large does it grow and what habit does it have?
It typically grows about 1½ to 2 ft tall and spreads to about 2-3 ft wide, forming a clumping mound of succulent foliage and flower-topped stems.
What light and soil/site conditions does it prefer?
It performs best in full sun (at least six hours a day) and in well-drained soil (lean, sandy or gravelly). Avoid rich, wet soils or heavy shade which can lead to weak growth or fewer blooms.
What about watering, maintenance and care requirements?
Water regularly during establishment, then subsequently water sparingly because it is drought-tolerant. Avoid over-watering or rich soils; prune stems in spring or early summer if needed to maintain shape.
What pests, diseases or caution notes apply?
Generally very low maintenance, but watch for root or crown rot in poorly drained soils. Occasional pests like aphids or mealybugs may appear. Avoid too much fertility and shade to prevent floppy, weak growth.
