    Description

Bring beauty and joy to your garden with Sedum spectabile 'Autumn Joy', a showy stonecrop popular for its drought tolerance and attractive rosy-pink flowers that bloom from late summer through autumn.

Autumn Joy Sedum is a clump-forming, herbaceous perennial with pale green succulent leaves arranged on upright, unbranched succulent stems. The fleshy foliage is oblong-shaped with slightly scalloped or toothed margins. In late summer, tiny pink star-shaped blooms appear in dense, flattened clusters. The flowers open as light pink and age to a rosy-pink color followed by russet-brown seed heads. Autumn Joy goes dormant in winter and the foliage dies back to the ground. The dried flower stalks can be left in place for the birds to eat the seeds during winter or can be cut back. This cold hardy cultivar has been reclassified as Hylotelephium spectabile ‘Autumn Joy’ but is still commonly referred to as Autumn Joy Sedum.

Autumn Joy is an excellent border sedum with its dense, erect flower clusters reaching up to 2 ft. in height. For a dramatic flower display, plant in large groupings, or scatter throughout a mixed border for a repetition of color. This low maintenance, drought tolerant perennial is excellent in rock gardens, coastal gardens, or containers. The flowers are attractive to birds, bees, and butterflies, and can be used in fresh or dried cut flower arrangements.

Easy to grow, Autumn Joy Sedum is a hardy succulent that makes a bold statement in the garden with rosy pink blooms in the fall. This carefree and waterwise perennial is sure to be a favorite for years.

    Plant care

Sedum Autumn Joy grows best in lean soil with good drainage. For container plantings use a cactus potting soil like Kellogg Palm & Cactus Mix for best results. Plant in a sunny location that will get a minimum of 6 hours of full sun. The stems may become floppy if planted in a shady location.

Water deeply after planting then reduce frequency allowing the soil to dry in between waterings. Sedum Autumn Joy is a drought tolerant perennial but requires more water than most succulent plants. Overwatering will result in floppy plants.

Winter-dormant, the foliage dies back to the ground. New growth will emerge in early spring. The roots are hardy below -$30℉.

Relatively maintenance free, the dried flower stalks should be removed or cut back before new growth appears in early spring. Autumn Joy grows easily in nutrient-poor soil and does not require fertilizer. Rejuvenate plants by dividing clumps every 3 to 5 years in early spring.

This Sedum cultivar is also known as ‘Herbstfreude’ which is the German word for Autumn Joy.

    FAQ's

Q: When should I cut back Sedum Autumn Joy?
A: Autumn Joy begins to go dormant in late fall. The foliage dies back but the erect, dried flower heads and stalks remain in place. These flower stalks can be cut back in late fall for a tidy appearance. However, you can choose to cut back the dried flower stalks in early spring when the new growth begins to emerge. Choosing to leave the dried flowers in place over the winter provides a seed source for birds and attracts wildlife to your garden.

Q: Can I divide Autumn Joy Sedum clumps?
A: Yes, dig up and divide your clumps of Sedum Autumn Joy when the new growth emerges in early spring. This could reduce the amount of blooms initially but by next year the vigor and blooms will return in full force.

Q: Why is my Sedum Autumn Joy floppy?
A: Autumn Joy Sedum prefers full sun and well-drained soil. If grown in a shady location and/or overly moist soil, your Sedum Autumn Joy will become floppy. Reduce the amount of water or move to a location that gets at least 6 hours of full sun.
