Autumn Blaze Red Maple Tree
Acer rubrum 'Autumn Blaze' (A. x freemanii 'Jeffsred')
Acer rubrum 'Autumn Blaze' is a fast-growing, tall hybrid of red maple and silver maple, featuring a broad, oval to rounded canopy. Also known as a Freeman maple (Acer x freemanii 'Jeffsred'), this deciduous tree showcases blazing red fall color, dense uniform branching, and rapid growth. One of the most popular red maples, ‘Autumn Blaze’ is relatively disease-resistant and tolerant of both dry and wet soil conditions, though it grows best in moist soil.
The Autumn Blaze red maple is an excellent shade tree, ideal for planting in rows along driveways or as a standout specimen. In spring, deep green leaves emerge, transitioning to vibrant crimson and scarlet red hues in fall before shedding. Under optimal conditions, ‘Autumn Blaze’ can grow 3 to 4 feet per year.
Planting – Red maple trees thrive in full sun and well-drained, moist soil. Choose a location with room for growth and at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the container and as deep as the root ball. Ensure the trunk is vertical before backfilling with soil. Apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as Gromulch 2-in-1 Planting Mix & Mulch, around the base, making sure the mulch doesn't touch the trunk.
Watering – Newly planted trees should be watered at least 3 times a week for the first 3 months, gradually reducing to weekly waterings. Water deeply and slowly for the first few years to help your maple develop an extensive root system. Adjust the watering schedule based on environmental factors like wind, temperature, and light intensity. Mulching can help retain moisture, but ensure it stays away from the trunk.
Fertilizing – If your soil is nutrient-poor, apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring.
Pruning – Red maples generally require little pruning. If shaping is desired, prune in late winter while the tree is still dormant, removing only ¼ to ⅓ of the branches. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and thin the canopy for improved light and air circulation, if needed.
Winter Hardiness – Hardy down to -30°F, Autumn Blaze maple trees thrive in USDA zones 4–8. With extra care, they can also be grown in warmer zones.
