Westringia 'Wynyabbie Gem'
Westringia 'Wynyabbie Gem' is a versatile, dense, evergreen shrub that resembles boxwood with its bushy foliage and similar landscape uses. However, its lavender-blue flowers and attractive olive-green, small, pointed leaves set it apart. Wynyabbie Gem Westringia is a drought-tolerant alternative to traditional boxwood hedges. With its upright, compact growth habit, it’s perfect for privacy hedges, borders, groupings, or as a versatile addition to any garden.
Fast-growing and easy to grow, Wynyabbie Gem Westringia adds structure to both formal and informal gardens. Known for its ability to withstand shearing, it offers endless design possibilities—from tightly clipped geometric shapes and whimsical topiaries to formal borders. This green-leafed, lavender-blue flowering Westringia grows 6 to 8 ft. tall and 4-5 ft. wide, making it ideal for accentuating gateways, entrances, or driveways as manicured shrubs or hedges. A waterwise Australian shrub, it thrives in both coastal and arid inland climates, tolerating wind, sea spray, and even the wet soils found in bioswales.
Wynyabbie Gem is a hybrid of the coastal Westringia fruticosa and the inland species W. eremicola, and it grows taller than Blue Gem. Also known as Wynyabbie Gem Coast Rosemary, this variety showcases lavender-blue flowers that bloom in spring and continue sporadically throughout much of the year. These blooms resemble rosemary flowers but are slightly larger. While the common name "coast rosemary" refers to the leaf shape’s resemblance to Rosmarinus, Westringia leaves are neither edible nor fragrant like common rosemary.
Planting – Plant in full sun or bright filtered light in well-drained soil.
Watering – Water regularly after planting until the roots are established, then reduce frequency and water as needed. It looks best with deep, infrequent irrigation in coastal gardens, while slightly more frequent watering may be required in arid, inland areas. Although drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from supplemental watering during the summer months.
Pruning – Westringia responds well to regular pruning. Lightly prune the tips after flowering, or prune more frequently to maintain a tidier, denser, formal appearance or desired shape. If left unpruned, Westringia 'Wynyabbie Gem' is an upright, rounded shrub.
