Westringia fruticosa 'Wynyabbie Gem' (W. rosmariniformis)
Westringia fruticosa 'Wynyabbie Gem' is a dense and upright shrub that can be useful as a large specimen or pruned into a tall hedge. The small, pointed grey-green foliage provides an attractive background to its delicate lavender flowers that begin in spring and continues throughout summer and fall. Will tolerate moderately dry growing conditions but looks best with supplemental watering in late spring and summer. Westringias are highly versatile dense shrubs native to Australia that can be used as formal hedges, topiaries, or ornamental shrubs. These fast growing plants have a naturally rounded bushy form but also respond well to pruning. Plant in full sun or in bright filtered light. ‘Wynabbie Gem’ is a hybrid between the coastal W. fruticosa and the inland species, W. eremicola. The common name of coast rosemary refers to the leaf shape resemblance of Rosmarinus, but Westringia is not edible nor fragrant like the common rosemary.
Requires soil with good drainage. Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency and water as needed. Prune tips lightly after flowering or prune regularly to maintain tidier shape for dense formal look.
