Soquel Coast Redwood
Soquel Coast Redwood
Sequoia sempervirens 'Soquel'
The magnificent Sequoia sempervirens 'Soquel', a California native, is known for its elegant form and adaptability. Its reddish-brown bark, soft, thick, fibrous, and fire-resistant, contributes to the Redwood’s iconic name. While Sequoias can tower to impressive heights in their natural habitat, in cultivation, these regal giants grow smaller, typically 60-90 ft. tall.
'Soquel', a cultivar known for its fast-growing, pyramid-shaped form, features compact, upswept branches adorned with dense, flat, needle-like leaves. The foliage emerges as a vibrant light green in spring, deepening to a rich dark green over the growing season. Perfect for adding height, structure, and grandeur to landscapes, the Soquel Redwood tree is an excellent choice for coastal gardens or any space seeking a bold, yet tranquil presence. Versatile, it can be planted as a hedge, creating a living wall of greenery, or in groves.
Planting Soquel Coast Redwood
Choose the Right Location:
- Sunlight: Prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can be beneficial.
- Space: Plant in an area with plenty of space, as these trees can grow over 70-90 feet tall and spread about 15-40 feet wide.
- Soil: Prefers well-draining, moist, and slightly acidic soil. It can adapt to various soil types but thrives best in fertile, loamy soil.
Prepare the Soil:
- Dig a Large Hole: Make a hole that is twice as wide and slightly deeper than the root ball. This will allow the roots to spread out easily.
- If the soil is poor, consider mixing in some organic compost to improve drainage and fertility.
Planting Steps:
- Remove the Tree from Its Container: Handle the root ball carefully to avoid damaging the roots. If the roots are circling, gently loosen them.
- Position the Tree: Place the tree in the hole so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
- Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, gently pressing down to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.
Watering:
- Young Trees: Water deeply and regularly during the first few years. They prefer consistently moist soil, especially during dry spells.
- Established Trees: After they are well-established, Soquel Coast Redwoods are drought-tolerant but still appreciate occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods.
When planting Soquel Coast Redwoods, consider the following spacing guidelines to ensure proper growth and development:
Spacing Guidelines
-
For Single Trees or Specimens:
- If planting a single tree as a stand-alone specimen, ensure there is enough space for the tree to grow to its full width, which can be around 15-40 feet. Plant it away from buildings, power lines, or other structures that may interfere with its growth.
-
For Multiple Trees (Row or Screen):
- When planting in a row or as a screen, space the trees 15-20 feet apart. This will allow the trees to grow together and form a dense screen, but still provide enough space for healthy development.
- If you want a slightly less dense appearance or faster growth, consider spacing them 20-30 feet apart.
