Crassula arborescens
Crassula arborescens is a beautiful evergreen branched, stocky succulent shrub with large heavy rounded blue-grey leaves outlined with vivid burgundy edges. Clusters of tiny five-point star-shaped white flowers with a blush of pink bloom in summer. The flowers age to a rusty brown color that contrasts wonderfully with the blue-grey foliage. This plant blooms with maturity and may be slow to flower in the garden. Silver Dollar Jade is slow growing up to 5 feet tall in the landscape. The large heavy stems can bend from the weight and break if not pruned properly. Easy to prune to maintain shape. Provide afternoon shade in hot inland climates, or full sun along the coast. Tolerates seaside conditions. Sun intensity and stress can alter the foliage color slightly depending on growing conditions. Give this drought tolerant, low maintenance plant room to grow in the landscape. Use as a specimen plant in rock or succulent gardens or in patio containers.
Best in gritty, well-draining soil. Water deeply after planting then afterwards only when soil is completely dry if needed. Drought tolerant. Do not overwater. Overwatering may cause edema and result in marred leaf surface. Depending on growing conditions, little or no water is needed as this Crassula stores its own water in its heavy stems and leaves. Prune to maintain shape or prevent top heavy stems from breaking. Self cleaning, the old leaves will dry up and shed. Best with afternoon shade in hot inland climates, or full sun along the coast.
