Queen Palm Tree
Syagrus romanzoffianum
Syagrus romanzoffiana, commonly known as the Queen Palm, is a majestic and fast-growing palm that brings a touch of the tropics to any landscape. This large evergreen palm, with its feathery fronds, is a California favorite. Renowned for its adaptability, the Queen Palm can withstand temperatures as low as 20-25°F, making it an excellent choice for regions where more tropical palms might struggle. It is an elegant palm that makes a regal statement, whether showcased as a single specimen or lining a driveway or street.
Formerly known as Arecastrum romanzoffianum or Cocos plumosa, the Queen Palm bears a lush crown of feathery, dark green fronds that can grow up to 12 ft. long. This graceful canopy of leaves sits atop a single, straight, smooth trunk that can reach nearly 2 ft. in diameter. Large clusters of cream-colored flowers emerge from within the canopy in late spring to early summer, followed by bright orange seeds that create a vibrant contrast against the lush foliage. Under optimal conditions, a Queen Palm grows 4-6 ft./year.
Planting - Plant Syagrus romanzoffiana in a location that receives full sun. In extremely hot inland or desert regions, afternoon shade is recommended. Queen Palms do best in well-draining soil and are adaptable to various soil types, including dense clay and sandy loam. Due to their fast growth, Queen Palms are not suitable for containers.
Watering - Water regularly, especially during the first few years after planting until your palm tree establishes a good root system. A Queen Palm looks best with weekly watering: generally once a week in winter, twice a week in spring and fall, and up to three times per week in summer. The amount and frequency are determined by soil type, temperature, wind, and other factors. Once established, it can tolerate periods of low water, but the Queen Palm is not drought-tolerant.
Fertilizing - Because of their fast growth, Queen Palms need fertilizer to look their best. Feed with a balanced, slow-release palm fertilizer containing essential micronutrients like magnesium and manganese three to four times a year. Proper nutrition is vital for preventing common issues like yellowing fronds and promoting strong, lush growth.
Pruning - Prune dead or dying fronds to maintain a neat appearance. To prevent unwanted fruit drop, remove flower clusters early, prior to seed formation.
Winter Hardiness - Hardy to 20-25°F, the Queen Palm grows best in USDA zones 9-11.
