    Description

    Phormium 'Platt's Black’ is a compact variety growing to around 3 feet tall. It was selected for its non-fading very dark brown to burgundy, nearly black foliage. The dark, slightly arching blades of Platt's Black New Zealand Flax can be used to provide year-round color and dramatic contrast to gardens. Can tolerate fairly dry conditions but appears more lush with regular watering. Does best in the cooler climates of Southern California.

    Plant care

    Prefers moist soil with good drainage. Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency. Some drought tolerance, but better with occasional irrigation. Some Phormium hybrids are less tolerant of extreme temperatures and extended dry conditions. Provide light afternoon shade in hot inland valleys for cultivars with arching leaves to prevent sunburn. For a tidy appearance prune out old foliage at base. On colorful varieties, remove any foliage that may be reverting back to green or bronze.
