Phenomenal Lavender
Lavandula x intermedia 'Phenomenal'
Lavandula x intermedia 'Phenomenal' is an exceptional Lavandin cultivar, prized for its fragrance, compact, rounded habit, winter hardiness, disease resistance, and tolerance to drought, extreme heat, and humidity. A prolific bloomer and easy to grow, 'Phenomenal' is a versatile lavender with aromatic foliage and flowers that serve many purposes. It’s perfect for fresh and dried floral arrangements, sachets, and attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees, making it an excellent choice for herb gardens, borders, and rock gardens.
A French hybrid lavender patented under the name Lavandula ‘Niko’, ‘Phenomenal’ is a mutation of Lavandula ‘Grosso’ and boasts a more compact form. Praised for its consistent growth with uniform, mounding habit and silvery foliage, ‘Phenomenal’ does not dieback in the center of the plant unlike some other lavenders. Its fragrant, long-lasting, 5-inch flower spikes of lavender-blue bloom from late spring through late summer on 12-inch long stems.
Planting – Lavenders thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight, and well-draining soil. They prefer nutrient-poor, slightly alkaline soil that is loose and fast-draining. Avoid planting in heavy clay soils, as they do not drain quickly and can become waterlogged. When planting, position your lavender slightly above ground level to account for soil settling and to prevent rot by ensuring water flows away from the main stem.
Watering – Water regularly during the first few weeks to help establish roots, then reduce frequency and water only as needed. Allow the soil to dry between waterings, as overwatering can cause plants to become floppy and weak. Water in the early morning and avoid overhead watering.
Fertilizing – Fertilizer is generally not necessary for lavender.
Pruning – Remove spent flowers to encourage reblooming. Trim to shape in early spring and again in late summer after flowering.
Winter Hardiness – Phenomenal lavender is hardy down to -10°F and thrives in USDA zones 5–10.
