Arctostaphylos 'Pacific Mist' is a low-growing, wide-spreading California native shrub with narrow, grey-green leaves and sparse white flowers. Unique for its fast growth and grey foliage compared to other groundcover manzanitas, ‘Pacific Mist’ is an ideal choice for banks, slopes, or other areas without foot traffic.
Noted for its rambling habit, Pacific Mist Arctostaphylos reaches a mature size of 2 to 3 feet tall and 6 to 12 feet wide. When planted 6 feet apart, it forms a lower-spreading groundcover, but grows more upright if planted closer together. The upward-reaching branch tips create a striking silhouette, revealing young, twisting pinkish branches that mature to a deep purple-brown. For a more uniform, compact, and dense appearance, pinch the new spring growth to encourage a prostrate habit.
The grey-green foliage is more grey in hotter inland gardens and more green in coastal gardens where it grows best. Pacific Mist Manzanita is disease-resistant and an excellent plant for dry shade areas.
Tolerates poor soils but requires excellent drainage. Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency. Regular pruning is not required but a light tip prune of new spring growth will encourage branching and result in denser growth.
