Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem' Espalier
Trained to grow on a trellis, Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ Espalier offers the same fragrant white flowers and shiny dark-green leathery leaves of an evergreen Southern Magnolia but on a two-dimensional scale against a wall or fence for a stunning display.
Planting Little Gem Southern Magnolia in espalier form is an effective space-saving technique that can bring drama to a small garden area or turn a blank wall into a lush view. ‘Little Gem’ espalier can grow up to 25 ft. tall or more but can be maintained with pruning at a lower height as desired. Slow growth rate, 1-1.5 ft./year under optimal conditions.
Plant your Little Gem Espalier 8-12 inches away from the wall to provide adequate air circulation in a location that receives full sun to light shade, at least 6 hours of sunlight.
Allow your espalier ‘Little Gem’ to root into the ground before pruning into desired shape. During the first year, be gentle when tying and pruning to avoid disrupting the roots.
Minor hardware, like eye-hooks and wire, may be necessary to train and hold the plant against the wall. You can prune and shape your espalier into a formal or informal style as desired.
Magnolias thrive in moist, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic to slightly alkaline pH. They can adapt to clay, loam or sandy soils but do not tolerate soggy or poorly drained soils.
Water your new Little Gem Magnolia regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, until the roots are well-established (typically one to two years, depending on soil and climate conditions). Once established, adjust the watering frequency as needed, keeping in mind that Magnolias prefer moist, well-drained soils.
Applying a rich organic mulch, at least 3-4 inches deep around the base of the tree will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth. Be sure to keep the mulch at least 6 inches away from the trunk of the tree to prevent stem & trunk rot.
Prune annually in late winter to early spring before new growth begins. Each year remove any dead or damaged wood and thin out crowded branches to improve circulation. Prune any branches that grow outward from the wall or detract from the overall shape.
Regularly check for new growth and tie it to the support structure with garden tape or soft garden ties to maintain the desired shape.
Tips for Success:
- Patience: Espaliering is a gradual process that requires patience and regular attention. It may take a few years to achieve the desired shape.
- Gentle Handling: Be gentle when tying and pruning to avoid damaging the branches.
- Consistency: Regularly monitor and adjust ties and supports as the plant grows.
