French Lavender is similar to the regular species (L. dentata) but has soft grey leaves, is more robust, and easier to grow in a garden setting. Short spikes with rounded clusters of pale lavender-blue flowers bloom nearly year round. Flowers of Lavandula dentata candicans are not recommended for human consumption. A low-maintenance evergreen shrub best for open sunny borders, hedges, mass plantings and containers.
How big does French Lavender grow?
It typically grows 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, forming a rounded shrub with gray-green leaves and softly toothed edges (hence dentata, meaning “toothed”).
When does it bloom and what do the flowers look like?
It blooms from spring through fall, producing pale purple flower spikes topped with distinctive, tufted “rabbit ear” petals that add charm and texture.
What kind of light and soil does it prefer?
Full sun is essential. It thrives in well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and dislikes heavy clay or excess moisture. Soggy roots are the one thing it won’t forgive.
Does it need pruning or special care?
Prune lightly after each flowering cycle to maintain shape and encourage new blooms. Avoid cutting into old, woody stems; it won’t bounce back.
