Giant Bird of Paradise
Giant Bird of Paradise
Strelitzia nicolai
This clumping, treelike tropical plant is commonly grown for its interesting and dramatic foliage. The long-stalked, grey-green leathery leaves are arranged on erect or curving herbaceous trunks. The large, white flowers with a dark blue "tongue" emerge from a purplish-grey bract in summer. May bloom nearly year-round in mild climates. A stunning frost-tender evergreen that should be given enough space to accommodate its large size up to 30' tall and 15' wide.
Planting the Giant Bird of Paradise
-
Location & Light:
- Choose a spot that gets bright, indirect sunlight. It can tolerate direct sunlight but prefers a little protection from the harsh midday sun.
- Indoors, place it near a bright window where it can receive plenty of light.
-
Soil:
- Use well-draining soil. A mix of potting soil with sand or perlite works well. This plant does not like waterlogged soil.
- Ensure the soil pH is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.1 to 7.5).
-
Planting Outdoors:
- If planting outdoors, make sure the climate is warm and tropical or subtropical, as it doesn’t tolerate freezing temperatures. Grows well in zones 9-11.
- Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and as deep as the pot it came in. Plant it so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.
-
Planting Indoors (Container):
- Choose a large pot with good drainage holes.
- Repot every couple of years to give the plant more room as it grows.
Care Tips for Giant Bird of Paradise
-
Watering:
- Water regularly but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.
- Reduce watering in winter, but never let the soil dry out completely.
- Mist the leaves occasionally, especially if indoors, to increase humidity.
-
Temperature & Humidity:
- Prefers temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C).
- It likes moderate to high humidity. If indoors, consider using a humidifier or place the plant on a pebble tray with water.
-
Fertilizing:
- Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Reduce or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
-
Pruning:
- Remove dead or damaged leaves to encourage new growth.
- If the plant grows too tall or wide, you can cut back leaves to maintain shape.
-
Pest Control:
- Watch for pests like mealybugs, spider mites, and aphids. Wipe down leaves regularly and treat infestations with insecticidal soap if needed.
Additional Tips
- It can take a few years for the plant to flower, especially if grown indoors. Make sure it’s getting enough light and proper care.
- If you see brown tips on the leaves, it could be a sign of low humidity, underwatering, or too much direct sun.
With the right conditions and care, the Giant Bird of Paradise can be a striking, long-lasting addition to your garden or home!
Spacing Recommendations:
-
Outdoor Planting:
- Space each plant 6 to 8 feet apart. This allows them enough room to spread their large leaves without competing for sunlight and resources.
- If you are creating a hedge or a cluster, you can plant them closer together (about 5 feet apart), but they may need more regular pruning to prevent overcrowding.
-
Planting Near Structures:
- Plant at least 4 feet away from walls, fences, or other structures to give the leaves space to grow outward and to prevent the roots from interfering with the foundation.
- Keep in mind that their large root systems can be invasive, so ensure they are not planted too close to plumbing lines or other sensitive areas.

Versatile Design Uses
- Great as a Specimen Plant or Focal Point: Because of its striking appearance, Bird of Paradise works well as a standalone specimen plant or as a focal point in landscape design. It can draw the eye to a particular part of your garden or patio.
- Effective in Mass Plantings or Borders: Planting multiple Bird of Paradise together can create a dramatic effect. They also work well as borders along walkways, driveways, or property lines, offering a lush, green backdrop with pops of color.
- Container-Friendly: Bird of Paradise can be grown in large pots or containers, making it easy to place on patios, decks, and around pools. This flexibility allows you to move the plants indoors during cooler months, especially in areas where they may not survive the winter outdoors.

Drought Tolerant
- Good for Water-Wise Landscaping: Once established, Bird of Paradise plants are fairly drought-tolerant, making them suitable for xeriscaping or gardens where water conservation is a priority. They can survive on less water than many other tropical plants, which adds to their appeal.
Year-Round Greenery
- Evergreen Foliage: Bird of Paradise is an evergreen plant, meaning it retains its lush green leaves throughout the year, even when not in bloom. This ensures that your garden remains vibrant and full, even during colder months when many other plants might lose their leaves.
- Provides Structure and Texture: The large, broad leaves provide architectural structure and contrast nicely with more delicate, fine-leaved plants. This adds depth and layers to your landscape design.
Attracts Wildlife
- Appealing to Pollinators: The vibrant flowers of Bird of Paradise attract pollinators like bees, butterflies, and even birds, helping to support local wildlife. This makes it a beneficial addition to pollinator-friendly gardens.
- Natural Habitat for Small Animals: The dense foliage can provide shelter for small animals and beneficial insects, contributing to a healthier, more biodiverse garden ecosystem.
Adaptable to Indoor and Outdoor Settings
- Works Indoors and Outdoors: Bird of Paradise is versatile enough to be used as both an indoor and outdoor plant. Its striking appearance makes it an excellent houseplant, adding a touch of greenery and elegance to interior spaces. When used outdoors, it can be placed in garden beds, near pools, or as part of a patio design.
- Container Flexibility: Because it can be grown in containers, Bird of Paradise is easy to move around to create the perfect look, whether you want to showcase it in a sunny spot on the patio or bring it indoors during the winter months.
Easy to Combine with Other Plants
- Complements a Variety of Garden Styles: Bird of Paradise pairs well with many other tropical plants, such as palms, hibiscus, and ferns, creating a cohesive, tropical theme. It can also blend into Mediterranean and modern garden styles, providing a touch of lush greenery and color.
- Ideal for Layering in Landscape Design: Its tall, upright growth habit makes it a good choice for the background of garden beds, where it can create height and act as a backdrop for shorter plants. Alternatively, it can be used in the middle of a bed to create a layered, multi-dimensional look.
Resilient and Long-Lived
- Long-Lived Plant: Bird of Paradise is a hardy, long-lived plant that can last for many years with proper care. This makes it a valuable addition to the garden, providing lasting beauty without the need for frequent replacement.
- Tolerates Mild Frost and Temperature Variations: While it prefers warm temperatures, Bird of Paradise can tolerate mild frost and temperature fluctuations, making it more resilient than many other tropical plants.
