Chinese Pistache Tree
Chinese Pistache Tree
Pistacia chinensis Standard
Pistacia chinensis is an excellent shade tree that offers stunning fall foliage in vibrant shades of orange, red, and yellow. This resilient, medium-sized deciduous tree with deep green summer foliage is low-maintenance and tolerates heat, drought, and various soil types, making it perfect for the California landscape.
Reaching up to 35 feet tall and equally wide with its umbrella-like canopy, the Chinese Pistache is an ideal choice for a shade or street tree. It can be used as a focal point in the yard or planted in a line along a driveway for a stunning display. With its deep, non-aggressive roots, it has proven to be a sturdy tree in the wind and a safe choice for use near patios and sidewalks.
- Moderate grower, 1-2 ft./year under optimal conditions
- Fall color: vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red
- Attractive exfoliating bark
- Winter-hardy to 20°F
Pistacia chinensis grows best in full sun and can grow in almost any well-drained soil, including loamy, sandy or clay. It can also adapt to most soil conditions and pH levels.
Provide good drainage and rich, sandy loam for best growth. Water regularly and deeply after planting until roots are established, then reduce frequency. Structural pruning in the early years is recommended to create a symmetrical tree with good form. Fertilize only as needed in early spring.
- Choose a location with adequate drainage.
- Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball.
- Add G&B Organics Planting Mix to improve soil drainage and build a strong soil environment that allows plants to reach their full potential.
- Fill the hole with soil to the crown of the roots (careful not to bury it), ensuring that the plant is straight and secure in the ground.
- Water deeply and thoroughly after planting.
- Add a 2-3 inch top layer of Kellogg’s Organic Gromulch to the ground to keep the soil cool and moist while providing a slow release of nutrients over time.
- Keep the mulch away from the base of the plant.
- For the first year, continue to water deeply to establish an extensive root system.
