Dietes bicolor is a low-maintenance robust performer in the California landscape. This evergreen perennial has narrow, sword-shaped, light green foliage that grows in clumps. The pale yellow flowers have a dark mahogany-colored spot at the base of the three lower petals. Butterfly Fortnight Lily blooms spring-fall in flushes of nearly two-week intervals resulting in the common name of fortnight lily. Drought resistant and tolerant of coastal conditions. Blooms best with regular watering. Attractive in mass plantings, in patio containers, or as a solitary accent plant.
Prefers fertile soil with good drainage. Water regularly after planting until roots are established. Some drought tolerance, but looks better with occasional irrigation. Blooms best in full sun with regular water. Prune at the base to remove old flower stalks and foliage for a tidy appearance. Divide clumps in early spring every 2 to 3 years.
