Easy to grow and maintain, these luscious berries thrive in sunny locations with well-drained soil. Before you know it, you'll be indulging in sweet-tart goodness right from your own backyard.
Prefers fertile, slightly acidic, and well draining soils. 6 to 8 hours of full, warm summer sun are necessary for optimal fruit production. Spacing of 6 to 8 feet is recommended for multiple plants along a fence or if trellised. Water young plants sufficiently to maintain and encourage deep roots and a strong main trunk. Supplemental watering during the warm, dry months is recommended when the top few inches of soil have dried out. Avoid getting irrigation water on the foliage, as this can lead to diseases. For disease prevention, a thorough cleaning of fallen foliage throughout the season and after autumnal leaf drop is also recommended. Remove excess foliage throughout the growing season to allow maximum light to developing fruit. Do not prune the first year of planting. After the second season, begin an annual pruning regime as the plants enter dormancy. Remove old canes that have fruited during the previous season, leaving 5 to 8 new canes per plant. Train the remaining canes to 5 to 6 feet long and spread them across the trellis. Side branches can be cut back to 12 inches. All other canes should be cut back to the ground. In spring and summer, watch for thorny suckers and cut them off at ground level. Self-pollinating.
