In general, Rhaphiolepis indica varieties are quite durable and moderately drought tolerant once established. A member of the Rose family, they are adaptable to various soil types as long as it drains well. They prefer and flower best in full sun but will tolerate light shade.

Water regularly after planting until roots are established then reduce frequency and water as needed. Tolerates periodic drought once established but looks better with supplemental irrigation in summer. The amount of water required is dependent on several environmental factors such as wind, temperature, soil type, and light intensity.

'Ballerina' is a compact dense shrub and frequent pruning may not be needed, but a yearly prune will help maintain shape for a formal appearance. Some prefer the tidy shape and will prune immediately after the flowering period to inhibit berry production.

Fertilize before new growth begins in spring with G&B Organics All Purpose Fertilizer (4-4-4).

Excessive irrigation or rain can result in a leaf spot fungus in some varieties of Rhaphiolepis. This fungal disease is most active during periods of cool, wet weather. To prevent this, avoid overhead irrigation especially at night when the plants can remain wet for a long period of time. Plant in a sunny location with well draining soil and good air circulation.
