    Description

Unique fan-shaped leaves that dance in the wind and magnificent fall foliage make Ginkgo biloba 'Autumn Gold' a popular choice for California landscapes. Plus, as a fruitless male cultivar, it lacks the unpleasant smell associated with other ginkgos. Adaptable and resilient, ‘Autumn Gold’ is a beautiful specimen tree admired for its luminous golden fall color.

Autumn Gold ginkgo, also known as the maidenhair tree, is a slow-growing, deciduous tree with symmetrical branching and an upright habit. It begins with a narrow form that gradually broadens with age into a stately shade tree. In spring, its fan-shaped, leathery leaves emerge a vibrant green, transitioning to a dazzling gold in autumn. The golden leaves remain for several weeks, creating a striking seasonal display before dropping—seemingly all at once. Ginkgo biloba 'Autumn Gold' slowly grows approximately 1 to 2 ft. per year under optimal conditions.

    Plant care

The Autumn Gold Ginkgo is a stunning, deciduous tree known for its fan-shaped leaves and brilliant yellow fall color. Here's how to plant and care for this hardy, beautiful tree:

Planting an Autumn Gold Ginkgo Tree

    Choose the Right Location:

    • Sunlight: Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day) for optimal growth and best fall color.
    • Soil: Thrives in well-draining soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to clay. It adapts well to both acidic and alkaline soils.
    • Space: Autumn Gold Ginkgo can grow up to 35-50 feet tall and about 35-50 feet wide, so plant it where it has room to mature without obstruction.

    Prepare the Soil:

    • Dig a Hole: Make a hole that is twice as wide and as deep as the root ball to give the roots space to spread.
    • Amend the soil with organic compost if the soil is particularly poor, but Ginkgos are generally not too fussy about soil quality.

    Planting Steps:

    1. Remove the Tree from Its Container: Handle the root ball carefully and gently loosen any circling roots.
    2. Position the Tree: Place the tree in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding ground. Make sure the tree is straight.
    3. Backfill and Water: Fill the hole with soil, gently firming it around the root ball to eliminate air pockets. Water thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots.

    Watering:

    • Young Trees: Water regularly during the first few years, especially during dry periods. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
    • Established Trees: Autumn Gold Ginkgo is drought-tolerant once established and will only need occasional deep watering during prolonged dry spells.
    Why Autumn Gold Ginkgo?

    Benefits:

    • Brilliant fall color: Striking golden-yellow leaves in autumn.
    • Hardy and adaptable: Tolerates a wide range of soils, climates, and urban conditions.
    • Low maintenance: Minimal pruning and care needed once established.
    • Drought-tolerant: Requires less water after establishment.
    • Pest and disease-resistant: Rarely affected by pests or diseases.
