Salvia 'Allen Chickering'
Bring beauty and fragrance to your garden with Salvia 'Allen Chickering', a hybrid sage native to California that is easy to grow and the ideal addition to your drought tolerant garden.
A member of the mint family, Allen Chickering Sage has sage-scented foliage and bears exquisite whorls of rich lavender-blue flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects and blooms over a long period. The perfect plant for a pollinator-friendly garden.
Allen Chickering Sage is a hybrid of S. clevelandii and S. leucophylla that was selected for its garden tolerance. This robust, upright, large, evergreen shrub grows 5 ft. tall and wide and bears aromatic, textured, grey-green leaves. Attractive whorls of deep lavender-blue flowers appear as 3 to 5 clusters skewered on 2 ft. long wands from late spring through summer.
Salvia 'Allen Chickering' is a tough plant that is perfect in dry gardens or on slopes. If you like the smell of sage then plant this in a location near a walkway where it will release its fragrance when brushed against in passing. Use in native gardens or for xeriscapes as a border or accent plant.
Low maintenance and drought tolerant, Allen Chickering Sage is an excellent choice for the novice or experienced gardener and a popular California native shrub for the waterwise landscape.
Allen Chickering Sage grows best in full sun with good air circulation in fast draining, sandy or rocky soil or on slopes. Clay soils may shorten the lifespan of this sage. Drip-irrigation systems will result in mortality for this Cleveland hybrid sage. Be sure to plant with enough space to grow to its full size.
Once established in the garden, Salvia 'Allen Chickering' has low water needs and may only require the occasional summer watering, if at all.
While the plant is young and stems are pliable, cut back ⅓ of its growth in early winter to encourage fuller and compact habit, and better flower production for next season. When the shrub becomes more woody and mature, only tip pruning is needed. Allowing the flowers to remain on the plant and develop into dry seed heads will attract seed-eating birds into your garden.
Introduced by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in 1955 and named after a Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Allen Chickering.
