Description

Wilma, a dwarf form of ‘Goldcrest’, is a beautiful golden conifer with a bushy, cone-shape that tapers at the tip. Its fragrant, lemon-yellow foliage deepens in color depending on sunlight intensity. The young, fine-textured, soft foliage matures into glossy, firm, flattened sprays. Low-maintenance, compact, and slow-growing, ‘Wilma’ is a cypress well-suited to containers, borders, or as a focal point. It is naturally cone-shaped, but this dwarf golden cypress can also be shaped into other topiary forms.

This chartreuse dwarf form of Cupressus macrocarpa is known by several names, including Hesperocyparis macrocarpa 'Wilma Goldcrest', Lemon Cypress, Goldcrest Wilma, and Golden Monterey Cypress. Whatever you call it, Wilma is both mesmerizing and luminous. Although technically an evergreen tree, Wilma’s short mature size and slow growth—about 6 inches per year under optimal conditions—give it the appearance of a shrub.

Plant Care

Planting - Plant Wilma Golden Cypress in well-draining soil in a location that receives 6 hours or more of direct sunlight. The yellow foliage color is influenced by light intensity: more sun will result in a deeper golden-yellow hue, while less sun or partial shade will produce very bright green or yellowish-green foliage. Choose a site that is protected from cold, harsh winds.

Watering - Water regularly during the first few months to develop a good root system. Reduce frequency once established and water as needed. Prefers moist soil but not soggy, water regularly but do not overwater.

Pruning - Relatively low-maintenance, Wilma Golden Cypress generally doesn’t require pruning. However, it can be shaped into a topiary with an annual spring pruning to maintain desired form.

Winter Hardiness - Hardy to 10-15°F and best suited for USDA zones 8-10, Wilma Golden Cypress can also be grown with extra care in zone 7. ‘Wilma’ is more cold-tolerant and heat-tolerant than Monterey Cypress. Colder winter temperatures may alter the foliage color, adding a light orange hue that will fade with warmer weather. Protect from cold winds.

Spacing Guide

When planting Wilma Goldcrest Cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa 'Wilma Goldcrest'), consider the following spacing guidelines to ensure healthy growth and proper development:

Spacing Between Trees

  • Ideal Spacing: Plant 3-5 feet apart if you are creating a hedge or row. This spacing will allow the trees to grow together, forming a dense, continuous line while still having enough space for healthy root and foliage development.
  • Individual Specimens: If planting as standalone specimens, give them at least 6-8 feet of space from other plants or trees. This ensures they can grow to their full width without competition.

Distance from Structures

  • At Least 3 Feet Away: Keep the plants 3 feet away from walls, fences, or other structures to allow room for growth and to prevent issues with roots and branches crowding.

Space from Other Plants

  • Consider Mature Size: Wilma Goldcrest Cypress trees can grow up to 6-15 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide, so plan for this mature size when planting near other shrubs or trees. Ensure there is sufficient space to avoid competition for light, water, and nutrients.

Hedge or Privacy Screen

  • Closer Spacing for a Denser Hedge: For a more compact, denser hedge, you can plant them 2-3 feet apart, but this will require regular pruning to maintain shape and prevent overcrowding.

Proper spacing ensures that the Wilma Goldcrest Cypress will grow healthily, maintain its vibrant, bright green-yellow color, and form a well-shaped hedge or standalone feature without being stunted by overcrowding.
