Calandrinia grandiflora (C. spectabilis)(Cistanthe g.) is a shrubby, mounding, evergreen succulent with bluish-grey-green foliage. Brilliant magenta-colored, cup-shaped flowers supported by tall slender stems appear to be floating above the foliage. Bees love the hot-pink flowers. Each flower only lasts one day, but the plant blooms profusely spring through fall. Pink Rock Purslane is stunning in the garden when planted in mass and is great in rock gardens, parking strips, borders, or containers.
Thrives in lean, porous, well-drained, sandy soils. Prefers full sun, but tolerates light shade. Water regularly during first growing season to establish root system. Once established, reduce frequency; tolerates drought. Apply a balanced, controlled-release fertilizer or a side dressing of compost in early spring.
