Grape 'Flame' is one of the most popular red seedless table grapes to grow or find at the market. The firm ruby-red skin of these sweet medium-sized fruit ripen in late July into August that are perfect for eating fresh or for making raisins. Vigorous and productive, with best yields in warm summers. It is also resistant to bunch rot. Grow along a normal vineyard setting, along a fence, up an arbor or pergola for a Mediterranean garden. Can grow to 6 to 9 feet long or tall depending on the pruning and support provided. Winter deciduous, the vines will drop their leaves in winter.
Tolerant of most soil types, but must be well draining. 6 to 8 hours of full, warm summer sun are necessary for optimal fruit production. Spacing of 6 to 8 feet is recommended for multiple plants along a fence or if trellised. Water young plants sufficiently to maintain and encourage deep roots and a strong main trunk. Supplemental watering during the warm, dry months is recommended when the top few inches of soil have dried out. Avoid getting irrigation water on the foliage, as this can lead to diseases. For disease prevention, a thorough cleaning of fallen foliage throughout the season and after autumnal leaf drop is also recommended. Avoid pruning until the second full winter of a new grape planting. A hard pruning of 75–95% of the previous season’s growth is recommended during the dormant season, between January and March. Remove any sucker growth coming from the ground and lateral branching that you do not wish to train onto the trellis or arbor. Thin the clusters in early summer to allow the remaining bunches to yield larger fruit. Table grapes are self-fertile, no cross pollinator need.
