This picturesque evergreen shrub, Echium fastuosum (also known as Echium candicans), is a great plant for mild coastal climates and seaside gardens on a slope or in an area with room to spread out. Great spiked clusters of bluish-purple flowers stand out dramatically above the long, narrow, hairy, grey-green foliage.
Native to the islands of Madeira, located between Portugal and Morocco, this fast-growing, evergreen plant naturally grows on rocky slopes in poor, dry soil and is perfect for the coastal gardens of California. Commonly known as Pride of Madeira, bees, birds, and butterflies love the spring flowers of this stunning plant.
Plant in well-draining soil. This plant easily reseeds. It is best to prune the spent blooms before they go to seed. A light prune may also help keep it bushy.
