Lavender Star Flower (or Starflower) is a fast-growing, sprawling, evergreen shrub adaptable to various forms and garden uses such as a climber, small tree, hedge, privacy screen, espalier, bank cover, or cover an arbor.
Not only does Grewia have many garden forms, but it is also known by many different names such as G. caffra, African Starbush, Four-Corner, and Crossberry.
The star-shaped, lavender-pink flowers with yellow stamens appear spring through summer, and may rebloom in fall. Fleshy, four-lobed fruits that resemble a square or cross-shape appear after flowering. Grewia occidentalis is drought tolerant in coastal climates, but may need more water in hot inland areas. Flowers and berries attract wildlife.
Plant in well-draining soil. Water regularly during the first year to aid the plant in establishing a strong root system, frequency can be reduced once established. Alkaline soils tend to turn the leaves yellow but applying a fertilizers with iron should remedy that.
