Phlomis fruticosa is a drought tolerant Mediterranean shrub with whorls of vibrant lemon-yellow flowers on erect stems. The flowers have a light clove scent and bloom late spring to summer. This fast-growing, bushy evergreen has grey-green, soft woolly leaves that are 2-3 inches long. Grows well in coastal conditions with full sun or light shade for hotter inland gardens. Although drought tolerant, Jerusalem Sage looks best when given a little water in summer. Prune annually to maintain form. Remove spent flowers for a tidy appearance but birds like the seedheads and some people like its architectural appearance in the landscape. Use in dry gardens or meadows. Plant in borders or as an accent plant.
