    Description

Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as English Laurel, is an excellent choice for formal hedges and privacy screens due to its dense branching and broad, leathery, dark green foliage. While this fast-growing evergreen shrub is commonly planted in groups to create hedges, privacy screens, and windbreaks, it can also be trained or pruned into a small tree, topiary, or a standalone lush shrub.

In spring, English Laurel, also known as Cherry Laurel, produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that bloom along upright spikes, reaching up to 5 inches in length. While the flowers are not overly flashy, they fill the garden with a pleasant sweet scent. The 6-inch long leaves, when crushed, release a scent reminiscent of almonds. Under optimal conditions, Prunus laurocerasus can grow 2-3 feet per year.

    Plant Care

Planting - English Laurel prefers moist, well-drained loam soil but can adapt to a variety of soil conditions, including alkaline, clay, sandy, and acidic soils. It also tolerates drought, dry shade, and coastal conditions. Plant it in a location that receives full sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. In cooler climates, it prefers more sun, while in warmer climates, it benefits from some shade.

Watering - Water regularly, especially during the first few years after planting until your tree establishes a good root system. Applying a rich organic mulch around the base of the tree will help retain soil moisture and encourage healthy growth.

Pruning - English Laurel requires minimal maintenance. Prune as needed to remove damaged or overgrown branches or to maintain the desired shape. Since the flowers bloom on older wood, heavy or frequent hedging can significantly reduce flower production. To preserve flowering, it’s best to prune immediately after the flowering period. This timing allows the plant to develop new growth and set buds for the next season.

Winter Hardiness - Hardy to -5°F, and grows best in USDA zones 6-9, Prunus laurocerasus can be grown with extra care in zone 10.
