Prunus laurocerasus, commonly known as English Laurel, is an excellent choice for formal hedges and privacy screens due to its dense branching and broad, leathery, dark green foliage. While this fast-growing evergreen shrub is commonly planted in groups to create hedges, privacy screens, and windbreaks, it can also be trained or pruned into a small tree, topiary, or a standalone lush shrub.

In spring, English Laurel, also known as Cherry Laurel, produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that bloom along upright spikes, reaching up to 5 inches in length. While the flowers are not overly flashy, they fill the garden with a pleasant sweet scent. The 6-inch long leaves, when crushed, release a scent reminiscent of almonds. Under optimal conditions, Prunus laurocerasus can grow 2-3 feet per year.

How large does English Laurel grow?
It can grow 10 to 20 feet tall and 6 to 10 feet wide, forming a dense, evergreen shrub. With regular pruning, it can also be maintained as a hedge of almost any height.
What type of light does it prefer?
English Laurel does well in full sun to partial shade. It grows faster in full sun but stays lush and deep green with some shade.
What kind of soil and moisture does it need?
It prefers moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter. Avoid standing water, but keep the soil from drying out completely, especially during hot months.
How should it be pruned or maintained?
Prune in late spring or early summer to shape and control growth. It responds well to trimming and can be kept as a formal hedge or natural screen.
