Blueberries are handsome upright, dense, deciduous shrubs with arching shoots and elliptical leaves that emerge bronze, mature to dark green, and change to yellow or red in autumn. Tiny, white, urn-shaped flowers are followed by edible, sweet blue-black berries in mid- to late-spring. Shrubs can be used for hedges or borders. 'Emerald' is a prolific producer of very large berries with a mild sweet flavor that ripen in summer. This Southern highbush variety requires 250 chill hours. Excellent for mild winters and hot summer.
Plant in slightly acidic, well-draining soil but can handle most other soil types. Water regularly during the first year to aid the plant in establishing a strong root system, frequency can be reduced once established. Prune off old, twiggy branches and fertilize with an acid fertilizer in early spring. Planting two or more bushes together(ideally different varieties) will increase each individual's overall berry yield.
