Cercis canadensis, commonly known as the Eastern Redbud, is a deciduous flowering tree native to the eastern United States. In early spring, stunning rosy-pink flowers bloom profusely on bare branches, before the heart-shaped green leaves emerge from dormancy. By summer, the flowers give way to brown seed pods, 2 to 4 inches long, and persist into winter. In autumn, the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of yellow, making the tree a year-round focal point.
The Eastern Redbud is a low-maintenance, ornamental tree that adds curb appeal to any property. It works beautifully as a street tree, foundation planting, or as a specimen tree in a woodland garden. The Eastern Redbud grows taller and faster than C. occidentalis, the Western Redbud.
Cercis trees are deciduous, meaning they lose their leaves in the winter. In the fall, their leaves typically change color, often turning shades of yellow before falling off as the tree prepares for dormancy during the colder months. This is a natural adaptation to help the tree conserve energy when conditions are less favorable for growth. Learn more.
