Boxwoods are grown for their small, neat, leathery leaves and dense long-lived growth habits. Buxus sempervirens 'Suffruticosa' is the best dwarf boxwood for small scale applications. Best in USDA zones 5-8, this Dwarf English Boxwood has a naturally rounded form with dense foliage and fine branching, making this a good choice for formal hedges, edges and topiary. Easy to grow and low-maintenance, Suffruticosa's slow growth reduces the need for constant trimming and shearing. Resistant to box leaf miner.
Thrives in enriched, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soils. Mulch root zone to conserve moisture and to keep roots cool. Water deeply and regularly during the first few growing seasons to establish an extensive root system; reduce frequency once established. Apply fertilizer in early spring. Prune periodically to shape.
