Ceanothus 'Dark Star' is a medium-sized, evergreen California native shrub with very tiny and very dark green leaves with a quilted, dimpled appearance. Luminous, dark cobalt-blue flower clusters, that are larger than the leaves, bloom profusely in the spring for a breathtaking effect. The burgundy-colored buds add another colorful element to this showstopper. Very similar to ‘Julia Phelps’ in containers but in the landscape, Dark Star California Lilac has darker leaves and grows wider. Best in coastal gardens. Use as a privacy screen or accent plant. Drought resistant. Attracts birds, bees, and butterflies.
Requires soil with good drainage. After planting, water regularly until roots are established then reduce irrigation frequency. Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins. Prune to shape after the first flower flush in spring. Best suited to coastal gardens.
