Description

California Sycamore Tree (Platanus racemosa) is a striking addition to any landscape, renowned for its dramatic presence and rapid growth (2-3ft/yr). As a California Native Tree, it features large, green palmate leaves that transform into a vibrant golden-yellow in the fall, enriching the seasonal palette.

One of its most distinctive features is the exfoliating bark, which peels away to reveal a captivating patchwork of white, gray, pink, and tan tones, providing year-round visual interest. As the tree matures, its twisting branches create a unique, sculptural silhouette that enhances any landscape.

Following its blooming period, the California Sycamore produces distinctive seed balls, which add further visual interest and serve as a food source for various wildlife. In addition to its striking appearance, the California Sycamore is an important habitat for birds and insects, serving as a host plant for the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly. This long-lived species thrives in the region’s Mediterranean climate, adapting well to varying conditions.

Also known as the Western Sycamore or California Plane Tree, the California Sycamore elevates the charm of California's diverse climate.

Plant Care

Planting - California Sycamore thrives in moist, well-drained soil. Plant in a location that receives full sun to partial sun, with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Naturally found growing along creeks in the foothills and coastal ranges of California, it tolerates different soil types, wind and heat, but is not considered drought tolerant until it is well-established.

Watering - Water regularly, ensuring the soil remains moist, but not soggy, until the roots are well-established. Once established, adjust the watering schedule based on environmental factors like wind, temperature, and light intensity.

Pruning - Requires minimal maintenance. Prune as needed to remove damaged or overgrown branches or to maintain the desired shape.

Winter Hardiness - Hardy to 0°F, and grows best in USDA zones 7-10.
