Helictotrichon sempervirens is an easy-to-grow, clumping, cool season ornamental grass. It forms a bristly but graceful 2 foot mound of steely-blue foliage that is offset by an additional foot of golden-brown feathery flower stems in midsummer. Drought tolerant, the blue color of Blue Oat Grass is more intense in dryer soil and full sun. Evergreen in mild climates and semi-evergreen for colder regions. Use as a specimen plant in the border and rock garden. Perfect fit for the Modern Design and low maintenance gardens as well.
Blue Oat Grass prefers well-drained soils in full sun to light shade. Avoid heavy soils and wet areas in the garden as the plant tends to rot with excess moisture. Drought tolerant but an occasional watering can be beneficial. In warm climates where it is evergreen, an occasional quick removing of dead and withered leaves will help keep a clean appearance. In colder areas it is recommended to cut Blue Oat Grass to the ground in the winter.
