Description

Acer rubrum 'Armstrong' is a fast-growing, tall hybrid of red maple and silver maple, with a narrow, columnar form. Also known as a Freeman maple (Acer x freemanii ‘Armstrong’), this deciduous tree delivers an impressive fall color display but requires ample water to thrive.

The Armstrong red maple is ideal for smaller yards or tight spaces due to its upright, narrow growth. It can be planted in rows for privacy screens or as a standout single tree. In spring, light green leaves emerge, transitioning to golden-orange in autumn before shedding. Fast-growing, ‘Armstrong’ can grow 2 to 3 ft. per year under optimal conditions.

Plant care

Planting – Red maple trees thrive in full sun and well-drained, moist soil. Choose a location with room for growth and at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
When planting, dig a hole twice the width of the container and as deep as the root ball. Ensure the trunk is vertical before backfilling with soil. Apply a 3-inch layer of organic mulch, such as Gromulch 2-in-1 Planting Mix & Mulch, around the base, making sure the mulch doesn't touch the trunk.

Watering – Newly planted trees should be watered at least 3 times a week for the first 3 months, gradually reducing to weekly waterings. Water deeply and slowly for the first few years to help your maple develop an extensive root system. Adjust the watering schedule based on environmental factors like wind, temperature, and light intensity. Mulching can help retain moisture, but ensure it stays away from the trunk.

Fertilizing – If your soil is nutrient-poor, apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Pruning – Red maples generally require little pruning. If shaping is desired, prune in late winter while the tree is still dormant, removing only ¼ to ⅓ of the branches. Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and thin the canopy for improved light and air circulation, if needed.

Winter Hardiness – Hardy down to -30°F, Armstrong maple trees thrive in USDA zones 4–8. With extra care, they can also be grown in warmer zones.
