Rumohra adiantiformis, known by some as Aspidium capense, is a familiar fern often found in floral arrangements, but this easy to grow fern is a tough garden fern that can tolerate drier conditions and some abuse that other ferns can’t handle. Attractive green, leathery fronds slowly spread by rhizomes to form lush mounds that look good in the landscape.
Leatherleaf Fern is a medium sized fern that spreads slowly by creeping rhizomes to 3 ft. wide. This semi-hardy evergreen fern has finely-divided, glossy, deep green fronds that are leathery. The broadly triangular fronds are highly variable in cut and size. Durable fronds have an excellent vase-life and are long lasting when used in cut-flower arrangements.
Rumohra adiantiformis is low maintenance and an excellent fern for shady areas in the landscape. Its slow spreading habit makes Leatherleaf fern an excellent choice for borders or foundations. The glossy, rich green foliage looks good in a woodland or tropical garden, or on the patio or porch in containers or hanging baskets.
Leatherleaf Fern is a versatile and easy to grow fern that’s perfect for adding rich green texture in a shady garden. Strong, long-lasting foliage and its adaptability to drier conditions than most ferns, make Rumohra adiantiformis a popular fern in California.
